Our Grade 7 students have been working super hard in designing, making, and selling cheeseboards. This project has allowed us to make connections between science, math, english, and ADST skills in woodwork and design. The cheeseboard project started as an idea for our class to fundraise money for purchasing a hydroponic grow system in our classroom. We are selling each cheeseboard between $20-70 depending on size and material used. So far we have raised over $1,800 and counting!

We had a fantastic 2-day workshop with Skills Canada! Grade 7s showed excellent leadership in working within grade 4 to 11 groups. Welding, crocheting, team building, robotics, and a BYTE leadership talk.
It’s been my pleasure to welcome back the Grade 7 DVG students after the school closure in March. To help students return to more normal school routines, we kicked off the return to school with lots of outdoor time, getting back into in-class learning with reviews and check-ins, and practicing how to login to and access digital tools.
Highlights Some highlights of the month have been our leadership program led by Mia Lee who joined us for a week-long workshop through the R-Play program. We also went out to Fisheye Lake for an Introduction to Canoeing day and have spent some wonderful sunny afternoons re-connecting as a learning community outside through games, activities, and STEM challenges. Students also had an opportunity to participate in the Terry Fox run and a nation-wide event around Orange Shirt Day. English / Social Studies Each day has started with independent reading time. Each week, students take turns doing a book talk where they share what they are reading with others in our class. Our library day will continue to be on Tuesdays for students to check out new books and spend our Literacy block in our amazing library. We have also jumped into a deep inquiry around the concept of rural communities and urban migration. In this project, students have also gained photography and visual communication skills to work towards a class-wide photojournalism project. As a broader learning opportunity, this project also lets the students dig into their understanding of sentence structures, the parts of a sentence and how they can be better used and enhanced. We also look at powerful writing by professional photojournalists and try to better understand technically why their writing is so good. As a class, we are looking forward to combining all our hard work to create our collective digital story that shows ‘our place in the world’. Math We started the year in Math by doing a Grade 6 review and completing student check-ins around foundational numeracy skills. Students have been vigorously problem-solving puzzle challenges in groups on the whiteboard while also digging into the review concepts around multiplication, division, perimeter and area. We also illustrate how these foundational skills are still very much used in everyday life and work by measuring the room, tables and other things we found in and out of our classroom. We are now working on having a really solid understanding of whole numbers, looking at place value, and rounding. You can support your student at home with rounding questions such as “round 56 to the nearest ten?” Science In Science we kicked things off with an exciting project where we looked into the possibility of having a hydroponic grow system in our school. Students worked hard to create a powerful proposal to be presented at both school and town council! Stay tuned for more around this exciting hands-on project. During our Canoe trip, students worked on an inveterate study, while in class we have begun to investigate body systems by starting with the nervous system. Next month Some exciting events and projects are in the works for next month. We will be providing updates and letters home. My goal is for the students to continue embrace learning as a lifelong skill that can enrich their lives as well as gaining practical skills. I also wish for them to grow in their appreciation that they can learn together as a community and support each other in that learning. Your continued support and encouragement at home for your student amplifies that effort and is greatly appreciated. To support students in being prepared for weekly activities, I have ordered agendas for each student, and its use as an organizational and preparation tool is also intended to further enhance their life skills. They should arrive soon! This year, student work is posted on a Google Classroom. This is work that is also introduced in class during school time. Google classroom is a great tool that helps support our learning and helps us build digital literacy skills. Students have access to three Google Classrooms: Humanities (English / Social Studies), Math/Science, and ADST. Students can access their Google Classroom accounts by logging into rapid identity with their Yesnet accounts and following the links to Google Classroom. We practiced logging in during class a few times, so ask your student to show you our online classroom!

This is a spot where we will be sharing many of the different things we are doing in our class. We started our year with creating a Class Statement. Our Class Statement frames the expectations of behaviour and conduct in our class:
